Hakama

Pleated trousers of various tailorings worn by male and female characters.

Pleated trousers of various tailorings worn by male and female characters. Skirt-like hakama were common streetwear in the Edo period and in nō these are worn together with crested black kimono (montsuki) for all the non-acting roles. During practice and for “uncostumed” performances (hakama nō), the shite and other actors wear this style hakama.

Other types of hakama (ōkuchi, hangiri, naga-bakama, kukuri-bakama) are differentiated by construction, material, color, and decoration. They are worn over undergarments, but under outer jackets.
