Secondary or “side” role in nō representing male characters who do not wear masks. Waki-kata specialize in waki roles.

The secondary or “side” role in nō, the waki is often the first player to enter the stage and set the scene. Typically a Buddhist or Shinto priest, or a minister, the waki is always male and never wears a mask. In many plays, the waki is seated at downstage left in the wakiza for much of the performance. Waki roles are played by waki-kata.
