Shirasu

White pebbles bordering the stage and bridgeway.

White pebbles bordering the stage and bridgeway. The shirasu distances the stage from the audience. It originated with stages built within castle grounds, which featured an empty space with white pebbles or sand between the buildings where the audience sat and the courtyard in which the stage stood. The three potted pines along the bridgeway are placed in the shirasu area.
