Ryūgi

Stylistic school.

Stylistic school. Nō and kyōgen performers belong to stylistic schools that are passed down from master to disciple. The formalized system of ryūgi was instituted in the Edo period. Each school is headed by an iemoto and has a distinctive style.The five shite schools are Kanze, Hōshō, Konparu, Kongō and Kita. The waki, kyōgen, ōtsuzumi, kotsuzūmi, fue, and taiko players also have several schools each.
