Mai

Also mai-goto. Dances to long instrumental music pieces. These abstract dances function as a visual, musical highlight. Mai can be slow and graceful (jo no mai), strong (otoko mai), or vigorous and fast (kami mai), yet all use essentially the same choreography and melody that is performed with different styles and tempos. Two other long instrumental dances, kagura, and gaku, are similarly structured but have different melodies.
