Kuse

A narrative highlight passage that can either be seated or performed with movement.

A narrative passage in irregular poetic lines and accompanied by the two hand drums. Kuse shōdan serve as highlight scenes either in the first act, when they are often seated (iguse), or the second act, when they are generally danced (maiguse). In its full form a kuse scene retains the format of a kusemai, beginning with a shidai followed by a kuri and sashi, and ending the kuse with a repetition of the shidai.
