Also nōkan. The transverse flute played in nō. Its unstable scale is created by a constriction (nodo) of the area between the blow hole and the first finger hole that distorts the octave overtones.  The flute plays in rhythm with the drums for dance pieces and independent of the drum rhythms (ashirai) for intermediate embellishments that create atmosphere.
