Ōsode

Wide-sleeved open-cuffed garments worn over a kosode.

Wide-sleeved open-cuffed garments. These expansive, outer garments are associated with court costumes. The kariginu used in nō was adapted from a garment of the same name. Several broad-sleeved garments were widely worn by the samurai class, like the suō and hitatare matched suits. A number of ōsode were made for the nō stage, such as the mizugoromo, chōken, maiginu, and happi. Broad-sleeved costumes used in nō are three-quarter length garments worn over kosode.
