Ashirai

Free rhythm. For these passages the flute plays a set melody, adjusting the rhythms to the atmosphere of the moment. Short ashirai passages punctuate certain chorus sections and entrance pieces. Longer ashirai accompany the drums in short instrumental dances where the flute player paces his melody to the dances (mihakarai).
