Zeami’s plays

Plays by/attributed to Zeami

These are plays that Zeami has acknowledged having written in one or more of his subsequent treatises. Attributions taken from Thomas Hare’s Zeami’s Style (Stanford U.P., 1986). *Authorship attributions are constantly changing as new evidence is found. Scholars often disagree, hence different attributions can be found in play analyses.

Plays extant during Zeami’s time 世阿弥の時代で上演された曲

Plays formerly attributed to Zeami 世阿弥作と思われた曲

These plays were formerly thought to have been written by Zeami, but it has since been shown that they were probably written by other authors. In the past, over half the noh canon was attributed to Zeami. Now scholars verify the attributions, first by whether he mentions the pieces as his in his own notes, and then by characteristic stylistics.
