Court music (kangen) and dances (bugaku). Brought to Japan from the Asian continent as individual pieces, gagaku was systematized in the ninth century. The Chinese musical theory represented by gagaku laid the foundation for nō concepts like jo-ha-kyū and the musical scales and names of pitches.
